The second stop of the Sick and Twisted Freestyle Tour, this event was originally slated to be a rail jam but thanks to the early season snow Tahoe has been getting, the park staff at Boreal was able to step it up and build a slopestyle course, complete with two moderately sized jumps, rail options, and a mini-wallride. Props goes out to the Boreal park staff for putting in the time and effort necessary to construct the course, good job guys!

Turn-out for the Boreal stop was at an all time high, having to cut off registration after more than 80 competitors showed up to enter the comp, with enough female skiers and boarders entering to create separate women’s open/pro ski and board divisions. We can only hope that these individual categories will only encourage more female athletes to make it out and participate in the comps in the Tahoe area. Competitors were happy that their divisions were separated, “it’s important for each discipline to have their own category, I’m stoked to see this many female competitors out here today” said Snowbomb and Moment Skis Team Rider Becca Babicz “I hope to see more and more girls coming out to compete, it makes it feel more legit, and more fun.”

Following the registration I took some runs through the course, and other than having a slight bit of trouble picking up speed for the first jump, the course was in prime shape. Boreal had made a set-up that would undoubtedly allow for the participants to throw down. Practice went off without a hitch, with the majority of both skiers and boarders deciding to take to the skies and choose the jumps instead of the rail options. There was an easy but steady wind present in the morning but was beginning to die down just as first runs were being taken, making it easier on the competitors.

It was not long before I ran into photographer Jack Burnett, here snapping pics for The Snow Life. Jack positioned himself in the middle of the course, able to catch all the features and score some sick shots of those in the air. Check out his photos and enjoy!

Solid runs being thrown down all around throughout the competition, with a $2000.00 cash purse on the line everyone brought their “A” game and it showed. Stock tricks in the high-scoring runs included 270-disasters on the flat-down, 720’s, switch 5’s, and switch 7’s. Notable tricks were a corked 900 from Dylan Curry, various 450-on’s, Rodeo 5’s, and some big smooth spins coming from both skiers and boarders alike.

About an hour into the event, yours truly took over the Mic and was guest MC, Co-announcing along with Justin from Snowbomb, the guy who organizes these events. Big props to Snowbomb for putting together the Sick and Twisted Freestyle Tour, two events down and thirteen to go!

With the comp ending right before sundown, the competitors gathered into the lodge at Boreal to await the final results and awards ceremony. You guys should have seen the amount of swag that Snowbomb had to give away in addition to the $2000.00 cash purse, including a pair skis and a snowboard for first place in Ski and Snowboard Am, as well as multiple Under Armour jackets.
