Getting The Set-up set-up.

This past weekend, over 300 cubic feet of snow was trucked in for the 3rd annual Boreal Jibassic Pro Invitational.  With the anticipation of the public jib area added for this years event, people started showing up even before noon, all of the sponsors(and a few lurkers) set up schwag-tents, and things got pumping around 2:30.  The public jib area quickly packed out, with a lot of the competitors heading over to loosen up as well. Around 5 or so, the competitors rolled over to the main setup and went to work. Nasty spills mixed with some insane, mid-season type shit, made the practice session a can't miss. Once the sun finally set, the screen came up to show Poor Boyz Productions film "Idea", followed by
David Benedek's Blank Paper Productions "In Short" on the huge jumbo tron screen.

The setup for the competitors was pretty much identical to the setup last year, minus the 20 foot to dirt spill zones. This year, the bail out areas were much mellower, and had some strategically placed hay for the riders to break their falls with. A 30 stair scaffold with two down boxes on the either edge, kinked box with side bar rails and a down bar in the middle followed by the half-buried Boreal Short Bus.

Right off the bat, the competitors started throwing down hard. Mad-man Jason Borgstede KILLED it on the mic once again, only this year he was making it rain hundos on the competitors for sick tricks and gnarly falls, something that definitely elevated peoples bags of tricks! Last years snowboard winner, John Foy, started off strong, but bailed hard on his hip, which cleared the way for the rest of the pack early on. Riders like Zak Shelhamer, Nick Visconti, Nico Cioffi, Chad Tarbell, Johnny Brady, Zak Hale, and Brandon Cocard were definitely throwing it down, but it was clear a battle between Chas Guldemond, Mike Casanova, Scott Vine and Johnny Lazzareschi.

Chas Guldemond Holding It Down For Sure

These four guys stayed the most consistent all night moving from feature to feature, trying to one up the other in the process. Casanova started with the kinked box feature, front boarding it in a few tries getting a hundo from Borgstede for landing it first, and throwing a full bag of switch tricks on the down bar. Scotty Vine was working his way from one side to the other with 270's, a switch back lip and other combo's while Johnny Lazz was pulling some super-smooth 270 combos and gaps down the kink box.  Chas Guldemond really made himself standout from the rest however, from his non-flashy DC attire, to his middle-linebacker style focus. He was charging each feature with an unmatched focus and determination, which made his bag of tricks look even sicker. He pretty much sealed the deal with a huge 50-50 gap back 180 to flat off the kinked box and multiple 270's combos on the down bar, to backflips off the short bus at the bottom.  Johnny Lazz made the strongest runner-up vote in our minds. Until Chas floated the huge 50-50 to back 180, it truly was a toss-up. Lazz, all of 17, made the older guys realize that he was there to bang, throwing down 270 variatons on virtually every feature. If we tossed out the loot, and not to take anything away from Chas, Lazz had our vote. It's not like Chas hasn't been stacking fat chips for the last year or more!

On the skier side of things, it wasn't such a tossup for who was the overall choice. Ian Cosco and his huge-ass jacket put down some of the most technical, sick tricks on whichever feature he decided to make his bitch. Sean Hartel, Jordan Spohr, Rich Fahey, and a couple others had strong showings, and Tim Russell opted to skip riding rails for the evening and just try random insane backflips and spins off of the short bus at the bottom. Cosco looked to be in mid-season form however, making him the clear winner, and $3,000 richer.
