Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/09/22 20:05 I just want to know who would spend this kind of loot. Do you guys think a board that costs almost $1k is just way overboard?

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/09/27 03:04 Well for that much money you can get about 2 maybe 3 good boards.

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/09/28 04:35 Anything above $500 probably won't make someone a better rider. Some of my favorite rigs are about $500. Never Summer SL or you can jump on craigslist and snatch up a 2006 Burton Custom for $100 like I did.

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/12/02 00:03 hell yeah

last years GNU CHB $150, i was looking at craigslist... it's the shit, just not a lot going on in vegas. but a grip for a board?? are you kidding me? i know someone is going to get shot over their vapor. and how hard are you really going to push it? i'd be to worried i'd put a guage in the base or snap it or something.

doesn't burton have another board thats like 700? i dunno, again to much.

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/12/02 02:03 I don't think that snowboarders realize how lucky they are. a decent pair of skis usually starts at around 400 - 500. then if you want a good pair around 600-800, then If you want fat skis (for powder) expect to pay over 1000 dollars. Then If you want to use those skis a good pair of bindings starts around 180. For boots mine cost 775 and there is still much more expensive boots. some go for around 900 dolars just for boots. then the least expensive thing in skiing, poles start around 20 bucks. so with a good pair of skis bindings boots and poles we pay 1500.

Yeah, I was talking to a ski tech that had a Vapor come in and it was all dented up on the bottom. The rider used it for rails and said it dented very easily. They couldn't warranty it. To get the weight down the core lost lots of strength. Rails are not the best thing for bases but the board should require a good smack before it dents.

This is true. I rely on craigslist and pro deals to get stuff cheap. Retail prices hurt. It makes sense that skis cost more. They have twice the number of edges, some pretty fancy dampening, and hi-tech binding mounts so that takes the price up. $775 for boots! That is insane. Is that normal for high end ski boot? Snowboard gear is pretty basic so it's much cheaper. I am still amazed at how basic the bindings are.

hell yeah i love craigslist!!

i never knew how much skiing stuff was... i'm not interested in it so it's not something i pay attention to.

i don't know about skiers... but it seems like a lot of snowboarders put to much emphasis on brand names and how much something costs. i think that's retarded. there are some differences when you get into high price stuff... but generally everything will work.

like bindings... it just seems like everyone will rag on you if you don't have like 300 dollar bindings. i got some new ride ex's... i love them, they look sick, hella adjustable, stiff... but since they are like 139... they gotta be crap... this kid was ragging on me that the spi's are better... theres barely any difference in components, so i couldn't justify paying the 70 - 80 dollars more.

this year i think i spent like 350 on gear (board, bindings, jacket) i can't belive how expensive skiing is...sorry bro haha

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/12/07 06:15 It's fine for me I know people in shops and stuff and get good pricing on skis and other things but going along with the binding story Technica make a boot called the diablo, it sells for about 665 but they also offer it with magnesium buckles thats save a total of 20 grams for 150 dollars extra so unless you wiegh your boots youd never know the difference. I hear a lot of shit about burton but all the people I know who have them love them. When I snowboared for 2 years I rod burton boards with burton bindings and bootsthey worked fine they were light and handled well and those were the low end boards. The price for really high end race boots goes all the way to 1000 dollars and they are the most uncomfortable things ever. imagine putting your feet in cement letting it dry and then try bending your anles forward and thats how race boots feel. most skis dont have the fancy mountin system you talked about most you just dirll hole for the bndings the put in some wood glue and then wood screws. the others have a a "rail system the is supposed to eliminate the dead spot in the flex created by the stiff soled boot you only really need that if you are racing or into going really really fast and making tight turns. most park ski contruction is pretty basic as well. Its a wood or foam core with fiberglass wrape around it to make it stiffer then a base and edge with the topsheet or graphic on top then all that is heated and pressed. A lot of the price I think is the stereo type of the hoity toity condo owning resort going person.

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/12/07 07:22 I bet a lot of the high ski prices are like you said, just for image basically. They can charge it so they do. Snowboarding companies are pretty competitive with prices. There are pretty descent boards that retail for under $400 and $500 can get you a great board. I also have some Ride EX's and they are great and cheap. A $350 binding is just for the bling factor.

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/12/07 17:36 yeah i think a lot of it has to do with image, every time i went to ski club or went boarding with friends, every group has that skiier that comes from a wealthier, above middle class family. so i always thought skiiers just came from that class, i guess. i mean i guess that's stereotypical, but there are a lot of things wealthier people do that less fortunate people don't.

but i think there is to much emphasis on the need of "bling" and "names". i think people expect to be taken more seriously or think they are a better boarder because of how much they spend.

i also think that there might be a lot more research in skiing. it was the first, it's a bigger industry (although i think snowboarding is catching up). as far as like materials and shape... basically the "top end" stuff in snowboarding will have stuff like rubber to dampen.. and Carbon to sitffen...Aluminum, those materials aren't exactly expensive. you were talking about magnesium... i have never heard of a snowboard company using magnesium.

Re:Burton Vapor $949!!!!!!!! - 2006/12/07 23:46 yeah I hate that stereotype cause I have to pay for all my stuff and work my ass off all summer as a caddy at a country club while working any other job for neighbors or friends that come up just so I can get the stuff I need. There are kids I know that will only ski one brand and their parents buy them everything and they have such a different attitude than me or other that have to pay their own way.
